Pleasance Courtyard

<back blip>

A tradition for many, many years. A gathering of University and Student Union friends on the first night the Pleasance opens for the festival

The first night of pleasance
for me the very essence
of that self indulgent binge
that is the festival fringe

the bar staff are still eager
though their wages must be meagre
it's all still new and fun
on the first days of the run

the pounds pour out my pocket
as the bar prices all rocket
it becomes a running joke
that the drink will send us broke

but free tickets are a plenty
no hand need be left empty
"come and see my show"
naive performers crow

we get tickets for a preview
and to give the man his due
he's consistently quite funny
fine free, maybe worth money

and so it starts once more
though some think it a bore
the festivals have come
filling the streets with fun

it brings the city alive
gives it energy to thrive
its one gieant summer fete
it makes Edinburgh great
