Despite assurances from several qualified plumbers that plastic stuff is all nice and safe I'll still be looking at this carefully for a while before tucking it all underneath the insulation. Unlike the electrician the plumber didn't leave anything in too unsafe a place though lots of bits of the old pipes are lying nestling on top of the back of the plaster between the joists, wherever they fell after removal.
