The Bridge

Inspired by Portobelloman's reference to World Book Day, I thought I'd blip my favourite book.

It's the scale of Iain Banks' imagination in The Bridge that makes the book so impressive, I think. It blew me away when I first read it, and I've enjoyed it more every time I've re-read it. Hard to sum up what it's all about, with elements of sci-fi, love story and social comment. All this and a fantastically huge version of the Forth Bridge too.

Needless to say, this isn't anything like the bridge in The Bridge: but it might well be the bridge between New Leith (the Executive) and Old Leith (the Old Dock Tavern). It might be the bridge between the people and the government. Or maybe it's just the bridge between sobriety and a pint.
