Moo-Moo Mafia

I just realised I've been blipping for the best part of two months but never featured these girls. Looking rather imposing and like 'the heavies' here this is taken in our small yard of heifers which backs on to the stable. The main part of our herd are half a mile away. At the moment we have around 500 head of cattle but this will rise to over 800 by the summer. We are a beef fattening unit which sounds quite harsh but really isn't. We buy cattle in at around 6 months of age and then keep and feed them until they're about 30 months old when they go to slaughter. Most of our cattle go to Waitrose. During the summer most of them are kept out at grass. In the winter they tend to live in yards, most in covered yards and some in open corrals like this one. Apparently after the war the country's requirements in beef changed and they wanted bigger leaner cattle. So friesians, simmentals and limousines from Europe were the favoured breeds. Problem being they don't cope we'll with the harsher wetter winters in the UK, but with people thinking 'fat is bad' that is what the market required.
We fatten some of these continental breeds but they tend to come from dairy farms who keep the girls but don't need the boys. The meat is fine but not like that of the British breeds. These don't go to Waitrose.
Waitrose favour Hereford & Aberdeen Angus beef which I must say are superb. The cattle in this outdoor corral are some of them. These girls are Aberdeen Angus (I think lol!)
I took a few more pics while I was in the yard, you may like to have a look....
Give us a kiss!
