Registered Avian Offenders

I remember the first time I drove by this curious sign posted on an old barn in my town. I stopped and read it again. And again.

Was this a farm that sold tattooed poultry or did this farmer do the actual tattooing of poultry? Picture that. And were the poultry registered with the state police or was it the farm that was registered? And when in the past did the police have to get involved with the tracking of domesticated fowl?

I've driven by this barn and its sign dozens of times over the years, and I still slow down every time to read it, as if it couldn't possibly say "Tattooed Poultry."
