A friend of mine announced he had been made redundant and I could sense his inevitable loss of self-esteem.


Sadly so many people define themselves through their paid work.

But it does not have to be.

It's never a problem for writers an artists. Doris Lessing was once asked at the Hay Book Festival during the Q& A session if she had thought of retiring.

She replied:
"Why should I?"

She was 87.

David Hockney was on television last night talking about his new show at the Royal Academy, including a series of work created on his iPad.

He is 74.
