Man and his Dog

William Hogarth was a well known painter of the early 18th century. He was one of the first ever satirists known to the wider public. His works Gin Lane and Beer Street looked at the two different sides of drinking at tat time. Beer Street displaying the goodness of a fine pint of British Beer whilst gGin Street showed the downward spiral of heavy liquor.

Here we see him with his pug, often seen in portraits of him, but as far as I know not famous in his own right.

Of course, Hogarth also gave his name to the well known local beauty spot, Hogarth's Roundabout, a carousel of varied vehicles, circling continually, hooting their horns and calling out local colourful expressions.
