world in a grain of sand

international women's day

Women do two-thirds of the work, yet receive only 10 per cent of the world's income and own just 1 per cent of the means of production, according to the Oxfam website. Here in the UK, women are behind men in salaries, and many girls are still taught it's not nice to be an an acheiver, or that feminism is a quaint, outdated concept.
I recently received a magazine from de Montfort University, with an article featuring their local alumni - all 8 of whom were male. A more detailed look showed that the only women featured in the whole thing were either accompanying men, nursing or designing underwear - all valid things to do, but women do so much more!

today's image is intended to sum up what women need -
the book and pen for education, which many girls are excluded from
the seeds represent self sufficiency - either literally growing your own, or metaphorically representing the need to support yourself
the chisel shows the need for a skill, job or trade
and the keys are there to represent a secure home
