JVM my life

By JulieVMac

Yes I did

Got up at 6.30 am to drive to the west coast of Florida to go swim with the manatees - this is one of the only two places in the US that you can do this - their habitat is in an area where river meets the sea - Kings Bay - the waters are kept at 72 oF by natural springs which feed into the river water, flowing out to the Gulf of Mexico.

It's a shame they allow so many people into their habitat but most are well behaved - we saw quite a few on the trip today - they are enormous but so elegant in the water, no wonder the sailors of old thought they were mermaids, they are gentle giants! Towards the end of the trip we were lucky enough to see a mother with baby and were able to swim longside them whilst snorkelling. With your head under water you get to here the haunting sounds of the child communicating with mother - I thought my ears were playing tricks on me.

It was so hot today - thermometer on car topped 87 oF!

Fly back tomorrow evening so may be time to find the local surfers beach
