Marjorie's ramblings

Nasty crash

I spent today on a pre-walk for one of our forthcoming Festival walks, a 12 miler from Wall Village. The weather was mixed with intermittent rain, but the ground underfoot was dry. We had a good walk with long views to the south from the Fallowfield area and to the north from Hadrian's Wall Trail.

There were lots of sheep and lambs and the primroses and first wood anemones were out.

It was sad to find a dead sheep with a prolapsed womb in one field. She was newly dead and I contacted the farmer later.

Then, when we were nearly back to our cars, we heard a couple of bangs from the Military Road. We scrambled over the wall from our footpath and ran uphill to the accident. Three cars were involved. One had lost control as he came downhill from a bend. He tried to correct but oversteered. I'm not sure quite how it happened, but he hit a car going uphill, turned through 360 degrees and ended up as we see. The air bags went off in the other car and one occupant had chest pains, probably from the impact with the bag. Two teenagers were understandably shocked and hysterical.

The group who had gathered to help offered first aid, space blankets, traffic control and contacted emergency services. I'm full of admiration for the way in which the car bodies had managed to protect the occupants. Hopefully everyone will be OK soon. We left after 2 fire engines, 2 police cars and finally one ambulance arrived.
