Rubbish weekend

A friend had told me of a newspaper, photographic feature this weekend. The subject was 'Rubbish' Not a difficult subject to find here sadly...

Here in Luxor, rubbish is so abundant, that I almost accept it, as part of daily life.
But what I cannot accept, are adults and children of all ages throwing a wrapper in the street so carelessly, throwing rubbish into the Nile, into the canals, littering the streets with paper, cans and anything that is not deemed useful in their lives.

No thought for the people living here, families, children and even animals. No thought for the people visiting Luxor, the tourists that take away so many images of Luxor and share them with the World. No thought for the environment and in turn, no thought or respect for the planet, the World we live in.

Walking out of the village this evening with a friend, we had to pass this rubbish tip. Permanent fires are lit, giving off smoke that emit toxic waste into the air and the soil.

People come and sift through the rubbish that is deposited here, searching for plastic bottles, cardboard, wire and glass that can provide an extra source of income.

Once a lake, that was a photo opportunity for tourists as the sunset, it is now an area that is pungent and extremely unpleasant to those that live in the vicinity.
