Kilmartin Glen

Heavy rain overnight and in morning. Went by car to Kilmartin Museum and watched a video of the area from the air. It is a large flat area with higher sides where you can just imagine the ice melting and a glacier going through. There are lots of evidence of stone and bronze age remains.

There are several burial cairns built in a row over a mile along the glen. Each one is slightly different. At the south end there is a cairn with standing stones around it. The northern stone in this circle has an unusual design on it.

We went to another site in the area and saw these standing stones, 2 more burial circles and stones with cup and circle marks.

We didn't get to the hill fort with the footprint on the top carved into the stone because a heavy shower was coming in. This was where the early kings of Scotland put their foot inside the footprint to become king.

That will keep for another day. There are several more standing stones, cup and circle marks and burial sites in the area.

There is also a cafe with homemade cakes (I believe the soup was delicious too) at the museum and it would have been rude not to support it!
