Beesands

Went to Beesands today, a small community of fishermen and holiday lets. It is a good place if you are seeking seclusion but not on this sunny Easter Sunday. There was still plenty of car parking though and room at the inn. We ate at the Britannia, a humble shack by the beach serving fresh fish. According to a book written about 1900 there used to be Newfoundland dogs here trained to swim out through the surf to meet the incoming fishing boats. The dogs would grab the end of the rope and bring it to the beach so the boats could be hauled on shore. Strangely we met someone with an unusual dog-a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, which is a water loving hunting dog, bred originally from a Newfoundland and Retriever. Thought this was interesting even though it had no connection with Beesands today.
