Beneath Biscay

High tide

We want our beach back!

After building a massive new outer harbour over the last few years many locals are convinced that Gijon's main San Lorenzo beach has slipped away to fill in the enourmous hole that was dredged out at sea to provide the infill for the harbour.

The harbour company had been obliged to find new sand from elsewhere and top up the beach, but now they seem to be wriggling out of the obligation.

In reality I don't think the beach has changed all that much. Being a wide flat beach a large stretch was always underwater at high tide. If the currents have changed they will eventually have their way, regardless of whether a few tons of extra sand are dumped on the beach.

At least being submerged twice a day means nice clean sand.
