X-Cave

Saturday
Yesterday afternoon, Roger and I drove down to Carter Caves State Park in Kentucky, for a weekend camping in our pop-up camper. In addition to the caves which the park is named after, there are a number of spectacular natural bridges. In the morning we visited X-cave, one of the two caves that can be visited with a guide year round. Its named for the configuration of its passageways which intersect in the form of an X. We also took a short trail to Natural bridge. In the afternoon we went hiking on one of the trails which takes you past, or close to, three more natural bridges, as well as huge rock overhangs and impressive sheer cliffs. Geography was one of my favorite subjects in high school, when we learned about physical geography, including erosion, glaciation and volcanoes, climate and weather as well as studying the economic geography of other countries. Still today my interest remains, and I love seeing such places. The morning had been beautiful weather, unfortunately it clouded over in the afternoon and became quite dark, especially under the trees. We had a slight sprinkle, but it didnt come to much. A great day enjoying Mother Nature!
