From the beginning

Life in the blink of an eye

Left the section this morning then stopped for lunch at Jackson's. What happened after that was what can only be described as crazy.

Coming round a corner on the way up Otira just after a truck had gone through the barrier. We climbed down to the river bed not knowing what we would find but not expecting it to be good. We were shocked to find 2 guys who had been thrown out of the truck and were still alive and their friend who unfortunately hadn't made it. Luckily for us we were joined by an off duty paramedic who was great and dispatched a passer by away with instructions to tell ambulance control and get the rescue helicopters in. It took nearly an hour before we were joined by both the Westpac and Solid Energy choppers and the poor guys could get pain relief and get them stabilized. I spent the time talking with the guy who was in the most serious way and keeping him from passing out and Doug checked the truck was isolated and took control of a friend who had been in a different car .

This shot is of Doug, the doctor and the fire crew carrying the stretcher to the helicopter.

Good luck Simon and Steve hope you both make it.
