Lawlessness

Tonight I was at the formal opening of the refurbished Maryhill Burgh Halls in Glasgow, 134 years to the day since the complex was first opened. The new Burgh Hall building at Gairbraid Avenue was formally opened on Friday 26th April 1878. It came about due to the result of the increasing population growth in the town of Maryhill and the lawlessness this created.

And a very nice event it was too, with a speech by the great-great-grandson of the Provost of Maryhill who had performed the first opening. Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop spoke, and her predecessor and local MSP Patricia Fergusson was there too.

This detail is from one of the beautiful new gates in the arches of what was the old Fire Station - part of the complex. A great community-driven project which, like all things worthwhile, has not been easy to achieve, but is now a wonderful asset for Maryhill.
