Following on from last Sunday's cycle fun, we took a bumboat from Changhi to the small island of Pulau Ubin and hired mountain bikes. This was comparatively Indiana Jones adventure compared to the East Coast Park and fortunately the bikes had good gears, as it was a bit more up and down.
Much of it was under a dense jungle canopy; we passed through Golden Orb Alley where it seemed like all the trees were joined by the silky webs of the substantially spectacular Golden Orb spiders. Hand-sized-Huge. One of them was meticulously entombing its prey. As we cycled on it was easy to let my imagination rove; the fallen coconuts littering the jungle floor were skulls. Where were the cannibals lurking?! Intricately pretty butterflies fluttered past. Monkeys called out from the treetops; cicadas were in full raspy voice and the birdsong was quite haunting. We passed a herd of wild boar with adorable piglets. Or boarlets. Dogs roam free in packs of not three but more, when they appear out of nowhere it can be a little intimidating (and that's from the biggest dog lover). Every so often the ground became swampy, and mangrove roots poked up like fairytale kingdoms. Wood smoke filled the air and spiraled upwards from the small shacks dotted round the island, their inhabitants sitting outside chewing the Sunday cud. The reward at the top of one steep incline was a disused quarry, now a glassy turquoise lake with deep, ghostly reflections.
Mud splattered and exhilarated, we handed back the bikes three hours later and sat down to some delicious seafood and a beer overlooking the sea while a group of children stood on the edge looking down at some ten dogs frolicking in the sand and sea.

Didn't take that many snaps today, just wanted to enjoy the experience for what it was ... and needed to concentrate on the path ahead. But this chap really wanted his photo taken ...
