Police Scotland Year 2, Day 259 - PC Mitchell & PD

In the early hours of Sunday morning Police Constable Gordon Mitchell and his Police Dog Vinnie from the Dog Unit West Command were involved in the search for a vulnerable 81 year old Alzheimer’s sufferer who had been reported missing from his home address in Ayrshire by concerned family members.

Whilst searching within an area of nearby forestry, Police dog Vinnie initially located a pair of shoes which were wedged in the mud. The search continued deeper into the forest and in the darkness Police Dog Vinnie led his handler to the missing gentleman who was trapped in a narrow gulley, partially submerged in water. PC Mitchell was able to assist the gentleman, out of the gulley and remained with him until paramedics arrived. He was extremely wet and cold and was conveyed to Ayr hospital where he is recovering from his ordeal.

The family have expressed their sincere gratitude to Police Scotland and in particular Police Constable Gordon Mitchell and Police Dog Vinnie for their excellent work in locating the man and undoubtedly saving his life.
