Peeved, At My Wit's End, Lack Of Light

After having spent all day yesterday indoors I just had to get out. The light was very poor but I met someone at the viewpoint at Amwell who was gull spotting. Using his 'scope he said that a Caspian gull was showing well, because of its bright white plumage.

Something had spooked the peewits, I like using that old-fashioned name for lapwings or green plovers. We scanned the skies for a sparrow-hawk or the like. Nothing. A few gulls were flying with peewits. They predate but also deter other predators.

I keep thinking of John Clare's The Peewit's Nest. He wrote over and over about nests. He loved the idea of those secret womb-like places.
