Giant Phoenix ...

... (actually two of them), hanging in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan.  They were created  by Xu Bing in 2008-2010  from trash collected across Beijing.  Each Phoenix is 600 feet long and weighs six tons. After a stint at MassMoCA  ( http://www.massmoca.org/event_details.php?id=771 ) in Massachusetts, they travelled to NYC last January; after they reached  the Cathedral on Amsterdam Avenue it took four freezing nights to get them inside and hung. They'll stay through February 2015.
Xu Bing (born 1955 in China) moved to the U.S. in 1990, eventually to New York, and returned to Beijing in 2008 to become Vice President of the Academy of Fine Arts.
