Making a Splash of Orange in My Garden

My daylilies are just coming out and brightening up the garden. After yesterdays heat today felt cold... pleased it is a cooler day.

Jamie's cat was nowhere to be seen but all his meat had gone so he must be around... hope so. I dead headed some of his roses and headed home again.

Name origin of the Daylily:

The genus name Hemerocallis "day beauty" comes from the Greek words "hemera" = day, "kallos" = beauty and is related to the short duration of each flower. Each flower blooms only for a day. One mature flower stalk produces dozens of flower buds, therefore this fact is not so serious. An older plant e.g. produces up to 500 flowers. This extends the flowering period up to four weeks. Through a combination of early and late flowering varieties it makes a flowering period of several months possible.

The daylily is a monocot related to Orchids, Hostas and Grasses. Daylilies were originally thought to be in the the Lily family (Liliaceae) but are now placed in their own family Hemerocallidaceae and are in the genus Hemerocallis . Daylily species were originally found in Manchuria, Mongolia, Northern India as well as throughout China, Japan and Korea. In their natural habitat daylilies are found in swamps, seashore meadows, forests edges and on mountains up to 10,000 feet.
