Quod oculus meus videt

Birmingham by Night

I love that sensation when the hairs on the back of your neck tingle.  It can be a magnificent sight, a great speech, but most often it is a piece of music.  I was doubly fortunate tonight because it happened twice.

The London Concert Orchestra are often the visiting troupe at Christmas, playing popular classics at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham.  Tonight we were treated to the works of John Williams.  He has been prodigious over the last 40 or more years and doubtless everyone has a favourite theme of his from one of the blockbuster films of recent years.  The first piece of music to evoke this feeling was the main theme to Star Wars, just as the brass section kick in for the first time; the second was the Superman March, which was played as an encore.

i had no pre-conceptions of the evening but to have enjoyed the performance that much was a bonus.

While I did take some photographs in the hall, including photographing other people using mobile phones to record whole sections of music, i liked this view of the ferris wheel in front of the ICC complete with reflection and the basement section of the new library.
