Pied Shag or Cormorant

Back to the river bank - I seem to be hooked on going there ! This bird was busy preening and drying his feathers and posed nicely for me. While they seem to be plentiful the conservation status of Pied Shag is 'Threatened'due to decreasing numbers. They nest and roost nearby so there are many of them in the vicinity. Native to NZ their Maori name is
Karuhi meaning 'very messy house' which truly applies to nests and roosts !
