Here's mud in your eye

Origin: Uncertain

Self congratulatory, possibly from horse racing, where if you were the leading horse the hooves would flick mud in the eyes of the following riders.

Seems to have originated at the time of the First World War, which seems to have been a fertile time for phrase making, if nothing else.

Phil and I headed to the Forest of Dean and did two laps of the Verderer's trail, chatting about this, that and the other.

This, that and the other included trying to name the two tube stations which feature all the vowels, the first and last tube station alphabetically, retirement, bikes, holiday entitlement, kids and the parenting delights associated with them and other miscellanea, too dull to mention here.

A bacon and egg sandwich to counteract our fitness spurt, a cup of tea and then home to wash family bikes, clean inside and outside of van, mop porch, have shower, nip for haircut, nip to the shops, nip home to cook tea and now I can hear from upstairs that bath duty awaits!

By the by, if I don't manage to clean out the all the gack that lands in my eye I frequently wake up with a gammy eye the next morning. Thought you'd like to know this.
