Open locks

Whoever knocks!

This little cottage has Suffolk gate latches on every internal door.

They are cheap and badly fitted. They are very noisy!

Over Christmas, when we had our lovely guests, I became very aware of them. Especially the one on the bathroom. Impossible to close with one hand, it went off like a starting pistol when unlatched. That's not fun in the middle of the night! (Many times!!) It also has an hilarious cut out in the door frame to allow it to think about working, when closed it was a voyeurs dream.

So, I am changing it for a rim lock, just secure enough to allow people a bit of private space.

Even that's no simple matter, given the way the door and frame have been messed about to allow the Suffolk latch to operate, it will need the reversed lock (Done that) and a fillet to allow the lock to sit correctly, then another fillet to close the embarrassing hole in the door frame!

Ah well, nothing better to do in my retirement idyll, Eh?
