If you can't beat them...

Hybrid Witch Hazel

We needed to go to Carlisle for various reasons today.    When ever we go to Carlisle it always turns into a full day trip.  So after wandering round the shops in the morning and a nice lunch at the Toby Carvery we headed for our favourite garden centre.

One reason we visit every time we are in Carlisle (apart from the free coffee) is to see plants at different times of the year.  Winter is the time I feel witch hazel looks its best.  This is Hamamelis X intermedia "Barmstedt Gold".  I find the yellow most eye catching but they had a variety I hadn't seen before which was a lovely bronze colour, it was Jelena.

The "clump" is in spite of what it may look like the flower of the plant.  The flower is larger and better coloured because it is a garden hybrid between H mollis and H japonica.
