Interior of St Peter's Church, Petersfield, Hants

The rather bland exterior of this church gives little idea of its interior.  The blandness is mainly attributable to alterations carried out in the 19th century.

I wondered initially whether its spectacular stone arch was Saxon, but no, the building work was started in 1120.   The intricately carved pilasters and arches above date from about 1130, and the columns and capitals in the nave are a little later.

This photo does not do justice to the sheer quality of the stonework.

The richness of decoration is similar to - and perhaps influenced by - that found in the interior of Bayeux Cathedral, Normandy.
