Hyperionides

Tojan Horse

Yet another lousy day weather wise, wild, wet and windy :-( I'm seriously running out of stuff to photograph indoors! I'll need to have a serious think about what to do if this weather doesn't improve.

I got this little horsey ornament at a little shop in Turkey just outside of the ancient ruins of Troy near Çanakkale, or to be more exact the archaeological site of Troia (an UNESCO World Heritage Site) which is believed to be the site of the city that Homer based Troy on in the Iliad. I visited the ruins in 2007 during a cruise in the area, it a fascinating site which has had various city grow and die on it going back to around 3000 BC, in one place you can see a wall built from different materials starting with straw and mud bricks, through various forms of more advance stone and masonry work.

The ornament is based on the prop used in the 2004 film "Troy", the full sized wooden horse used in the film was bought by the city of Çanakkale and now stands at the city waterfront as a tourist attraction.
