Viet Cong Cu Chi tunnels

We have had a day travelling to Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh city) today.  On the way from the airport to our hotel we visited these Viet Cong tunnels where the guerrilla war against the Americans was waged.

It was difficult to take any pictures but the tunnels are amazing stretching over 250km with a network of hospitals, meeting rooms,  accommodation and cooking facilities.  The tunnels pop up to the surface all over the place and they are so well disguised that they are still finding new entrances.

What was particularly gory was the demonstration of the various ingenious man-traps that the  fighters thought of.

The actual tunnels are incredibly narrow.  This picture shows a vietnamese disappearing into one of the holes.   They have widened out some tunnels for 'larger' westerners to crawl though and the 5 metres we travelled was exhausting and quite scary.

The 1 hour flight South has brought us to a totally different climate.  The temperature is 30 degrees this evening
