Bread and Butter Pudding

Positively the best way to use up stale bread rather than throw it out and give it to the recycling. Never made it? Well here's a recipe for you to try:

Fill an ovenproof dish with slices of buttered bread (use unsalted butter) stacked vertically like the picture shows. Sprinkle it liberally with brown sugar and raisins, making sure they work their way down between the slices.

Put sufficient milk in a saucepan to fill the baking dish about two thirds of the way up, then add two or three beaten eggs. Slowly heat the mixture, beating gently with a whisk as it warms up. When you get a moment, grate some nutmeg into the milk and whisk that in as well.

When the mixture is almost boiling, pour it over the bread and butter, making sure it soaks into all of the bread right to the top. Sprinkle the bread with a bit more brown sugar, and put it in the oven. Bake at 180C until golden brown.
