The Struggle

The always brave Daily News Egypt published the low down on Egypt yesterday in the lead up to the fourth anniversary of the revolution on Sunday. It pulls no punches about the faltering path to democracy that the country is following under its present leader and I'm surprised it is still allowed to publish.

At a time when saying you supported the revolution could lead to your detention, it's been interesting to see how the country would commemorate the event. There was nothing big planned by the government and I don't know if they intended to have or permit rallies in Tahrir Square or not. One got the impression it was something they would rather not have to deal with.

How convenient then that the Saudi king died this week. As a mark of respect, Egypt's President Sisi has announced a week of mourning including the flying of flags at half mast. All celebrations of the revolution have been cancelled, whatever they were.

In Saudi, their late king has been laid to rest in an unmarked grave and in accordance with their interpretation of Islam no mourning period is to be held, flags will remain at full mast and governement offices will continue to open.
