End of the road...

After the weekly visit to our slimming club (another 1.5lbs off!) daughter #1 and I decided that we were long overdue for a visit to Ikea.  Just behind the store is this  splendid gasometer, or rather what still remains of it.  It is one of 3 constructed in Edmonton in the late 19th century. With the discovery of gas in the North Sea from the 1960s, the gas industry in towns across the country went into decline, and so did the usefulness of gas holders.  The gas holders could store up to two million cubic feet of gas – enough to supply 2,400 homes for a full day – but are no longer needed due to developments in gas pipe technology.

This one is currently in the process of being demolished (the crane to the right carries workmen up to the frame to saw through the metal beams)  to make way for a new development of houses and retail space etc.

I haven't posted a blip for Derelict Thursday before, although I have admired others' entries.  This seemed to fit the bill quite nicely.  I'm pleased to report that I experienced no safety issues whilst standing in the Ikea Edmonton car park, nor have I felt downbeat or depressed since taking this shot!
