Going through the Panama Canal

The wait seemed interminable as we queued in Lock Two for other ships to join us.

I had expected a less ad-hoc arrangement in this digital age but the ritual of going through the Panama canal has changed little since sit opened in 1913 at an immense cost to human lives- over 42,000 died from yellow fever in the building of it.

Eventually a huge container ship joined our tourist boat and a catamaran anchored itself to our side then we were ready to go.

Well, this is reckoned of be one of the 100 great journeys in the world according to The National Geographic magazine.

And today we entered the canal half way through on the Atlantic side and eventually emerged on the Pacific side.
