Thoughts of a Mummy

By Jaxndm

We'll see you in the night sky

Such a beautiful and emotional day.

We packed Aj, R&P off to Playschool/school but kept DM off so that she could join us at her Grandad's funeral service. I was extremely nervous about how she would be today and assured her that she could ask any questions she needed too.

DM took everything in her stride. As family arrived this morning, DM was polite and welcoming. When the funeral cars and the hearse arrived, we went outside and got straight in the car. Peach, his mum, sister, nanny, step sister and partner travelled in one car, whilst we travelled with other family in the second car.

As we turned a corner we caught sight of the hearse and DM saw her balloon travelling in the coffin and smiled.

We arrived at the crematorium to be greeted by close friends and family. DM immediately spotted one of her Uncles and ran over to him. Watching her hold on to him and not seeming to want to let go melted my heart. He's a giant to her, her little arms trying to wrap round his waist was a picture.

DM proudly collected her balloon from the hearse and held onto it during the service.

Throughout the service she remained quietly cuddled up to me. Later telling me that she wanted to look after me when I cried. Her only comments throughout the service were observations of her Daddy or Nanny crying and that the curtain was magic (as it closed to take her Grandad).

After the service, we went outside with everyone and she waited patiently for the right time to send her balloon to Grandad.

The wind was blowing in the direction towards the trees and we asked her to try to get it as high as possible. Her giant Uncle lifted her on to his shoulders and she set her balloon free. As it hit the trees she intently watched it to see it got free. Sure enough as it worked its way through the branches, her heart balloon was on it's way to Grandad.

We made our way back for the wake, picking up Aj, R&P from Playschool/school.

They were all extremely well behaved; smiling with familiarity as they found photographs of their Grandad.

Before we left Aj, R&P were keen to set their balloons free. In the open space and full of excitement, the girls sent their balloons to Grandad too. R&Aj had chose stars, whilst Pops had asked for a love heart.

Grandad is now one of the brightest stars shining in the night sky.

A massive thank you to those who joined us at the service and wake today. Thank you also to the friends who took the time to send messages. Your presence and thoughtfulness today made a difficult day, one that was eased knowing we had your support - thank you!
