wander, stumble, wonder

Atmospheric

Some places seem built for gloom. They revel in the rain, and sit sullen in the sunshine. Port Arthur is just such a place. When planning Tierney's week in Tasmania, there seemed to be one day that would be just right for a trip to a ruined penitentiary. It was a little soggier than anticipated, but not cold, so we dried off quite quickly.

This site has many cottages and sheds, and we spent a very nosy day poking around all the corners. No rush, no itinerary, just a map and a sense of 'let's go and look in there!' I've not had the chance to do that at this site before, and it was infinitely more fascinating than the usual day of being scuttled from building to building with no time to stop and reflect on the horrors of days gone by, and the serenity of today.
