Heroes

This medal is displayed in the Craig corner of Dunscore Church in a beautifully made wooden case. It was awarded posthumously to Jane Haining, a teacher and missionary from Dunscore who was sent to Auschwitz after refusing to leave the Jewish children she was caring for in Budapest. She died there in July 1944.
The Dumfries MP Russell Brown tabled an early day motion to reform the Honours system so that awards could be granted posthumously. This did not succeed, but it resulted in the creation of the British Hero of the Holocaust award in 2010..27 people were honoured that year,  25 posthumously, including Jane Haining,  whose relatives accepted the medal on her behalf and asked for it to be displayed in the church. The two living recipients were Nicholas Winton and Denis Avey. A further 10 people received the award in 2013.
