The sweat of battle

Every day I pass the site of the ancient royal castle of Dumfries, now just a grassy mound which is used for sledging and the rolling of Easter eggs. Here Robert the Bruce raised his standard after killing John Comyn in Greyfriars Church in 1306. This painting of him by Josephine McSkimming is at the northern entrance of Castledykes Park and was commissioned by the People's Project in 2006.
Coming out of the other side of the park, I saw an otter swimming in the Nith. Lovely.
