Pilrig Street - Quintinshill Memorial

97 years ago today at Quintinshill, near Gretna Green, a series of errors culminated in a horrific train crash in which over 225 died including 215 young men of the 1/7th (Leith) Territorial Battalion of the Royal Scots on their way to Gallipoli.

Nowadays it is difficult to really understand the destructive impact of WW1 casualties on communities across Europe but for over 200 young Leithers to die at one time, and a further 191 injured, must of been devastating to the community.

I am please to say that they are still being remembered as fresh flowers were on the memorial today.
