Turhan Baytop

Plants are often named after people associated with them.  Here is Crocus baytopiorum, named for eminent Turkish botanist Turhan Baytop who was involved in it's discovery.  It is a pale sky blue, a shade unique among crocuses.  His wife, Asuman Baytop, was also a botanist and is remembered through Crocus asumaniae.  See a picture of him here and her here .... how good is your turkish?!

Before you ask, no there isn't :-)

For a laugh at my expense you could listen here to a piece on Crocuses on BBC Radio Cambridge.  Click in at 36 minutes.
