Oyster farming

We travelled from Raglan up through Auckland and over Auckland Harbour Bridge. I remember when the bridge was widened by having an extra span attached to one side - this amazing fete of engineering was carried out by a Japanese firm and was affectionately known as the "Nippon Clippon"!!! Have now stopped at a small, mainly holiday, town called Snell's Beach. Just before we got there we stopped at a famous pottery called Morris & James and had a look at the most gorgeous ceramics.

After checking in went out on to a promontory and found a beautiful old wooden Georgian house built in 1875 (certainly old by European standards in this country) called Scott's Landing.

The photo today was taken near Scott's Landing of an oyster fisherman loading trays on to a scow which would be put in the water for baby oysters to cling to and out of the way of fish knocking them off as they foraged for food. They should be fully grown and ready for the table in 18 months time
