Hawkhills and navigation

Today my local club put on an orienteering event in the grounds of this magnificent mansion, now a conference centre and wedding venue with a training college in its extensive grounds set within a lovely parkland.  It was a lovely day and there was only one short lived shower of rain which didn't dampen the enthusiasm of all those who attended.

In 1630 the Temple Newsham papers record the plan for clearing the Forest of Galtres, the King having decided upon felling the forest in the previous year.  The document makes specific reference to "Grounds called Hawk Hills and the Shires of about 687 acres".

Set in 240 acres of immaculately maintained gardens and forest, the Hawkhills offers a magnificent backdrop for every special event, with its elegant dining room, welcoming bar, modern coffee lounge, lecture theatre and extensive suite of meeting rooms.
