Crazy About Birds

Starling

Here in the USA we call them "European Starlings" and most birders hate them. They aren't a native species. They swoop in in huge numbers and take over the bird feeders en masse. But. Look at it! What an amazing looking bird!

Since the first snow, last week, we've had two or three hanging around, along with the 50 crows, hundreds of Goldfinches and Siskins, 10s of Blue Jays and Cardinals. Plus the other miscellaneous regulars. Today there were probably a dozen Starlings, and I'm sure there will be more arriving as word gets out that there's food available, and as long as the snow on the ground lingers - which it will, because it's supposed to be COLD this week. So far everyone seems to be getting a fair share, so I'm okay with whoever shows up to eat. I guess as long as I'm willing to keep spending more on bird seed than human food, everyone will be happy and well fed.
