El Capitan

At some 3000 feet of cheer cliff this is a serious climb. Our tour bus driver has climbed it six times and gave a talk about the climb.

It can take 5 or 6 days to climb some of the routes. It is necessary to take all your food and particularly water in a "haul bag" that weighs up to 180 pounds. Sleeping is done in a "hang bag" that is anchored to the face at six points.

From a distance the rock face looks smooth, but up close there are some ledges big enough to park a tour bus. Some of the vertical cracks are wide enough for two men to stand shoulder to shoulder.

Some routes cannot use pitons driven into the granite, so a series of various sized wedges are used as anchors.

Some very serious climbers venture forth on these rocks.

Tomorrow we will head to Oakland Airport so Becky can meet her flight on Saturday morning.
