When I was young, my pony and goats would eat thistles like this. The goats chomped on them with enthusiasm while the pony would roll them cautiously around his mouth before biting down gently. I thought he was mad.

I assume our Australian thistles are inherited from our Scottish settlers. They are certainly considered a weed now as  indicated by the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation).
