Meet Charles

Today I was privileged to meet a sugar producer from Malawi. His name is Charles Chavi and he is touring Britain as part of Fair trade Fortnight. Last night he was in Dunscore, this afternoon Dumfries, and tonight he will be in Edinburgh. He has already been to London, Oxford and the Midlands. Everywhere he goes, Charles talks to people about the difference which Fairtrade has made to his community, funding farming improvements and community projects such as new schools, bore holes and bicycle ambulances.
I took Charles from his B&B to meet Iain, who runs the Galloway Fudge Company. Iain gets through 300 big bags of sugar a year and all of it is Fairtrade. We went on to have lunch in Dumfries at the fabby Mrs Green's, and then Charles gave a PowerPoint presentation to the Dumfries Fairtrade Group and their supporters.
It's very rare to get the encouragement to eat more (Fairtrade) sugar!
