Rufous Hummingbird

It is beginning to feel like we have quickly sped through spring and arrived at summer. The time changed at two o'clock this morning to Pacific Daylight Time, so it will be light until seven o'clock, the skies are a cloudless blue and the temperatures are warming up every day. The daffodils are almost finished, the few gaudy neon orange and shocking pink ice plants that survived last year's freeze are in full bloom. The crepe myrtles are budding and the oak trees are fully clothed in spring green.

The hummingbirds seem unfazed by anything , zooming around the back yard, buzzing our heads if we are sitting out there, checking out the lantana and feeding at the Anchor Steam beer bottle hummingbird feeder. They are still devilishly difficult to photograph. They just won't hold still!

We went to a Mexican dinner and fundraiser at the Presbyterian church last night to raise money for a group of kids, including Will, who will be going to Mexico, Tijuana to be exact, over spring break. Their mission is to raise enough money to build three houses in four days in the Las Carrecas shantytown. We saw a little video which did not really enlighten us as to how this is accomplished., Some of the kids have been there many times, but a lot, like Will will be going for their first time and do not know one end of a hammer from the other.

I mention this especially for Lady Findhorn and His Lordship, who once drove through Las Carecas with us. Originally, HL wanted to go to Tijuana, but my brother disabused him of that idea, and I think they learned why on the drive through Las Carrecas. on our way  to Ensenada, home of the famous Hussongs Cantina, which was founded by Rick's friend Ricardo Hussong's grandfather. We had a wonderful time.

Perhaps, Lady F and HL, you would like to become "prayer partners" for Will as were exhorted to do last night. Not exactly reassuring…especially since Will is nominally Catholic and perhaps Presbyterian prayers on his behalf would fall on deaf ears….
