The Old Church Inn

These 16 Century buildings in Penshurst create an arch between the the original Leicester Square  (See here)  and the church. In the 1500s, travellers to the church from surrounding villages were given food and drink prepared in the "Inn" and allowed to pass out shelter under the arch. The upkeep of the Church Inns later passed to the Lord of the Manor  and the innkeepers became known as landlords . The Puritans abolished Church Inns.  This Inn is Grade II listed and thought to be one of only 2 left standing in England. The writing above the arch reads "My flesh also shall rest in Hope"

This was the starting point of a walk this afternoon around the Penshurst estate with a girl friend. We found 2 geocaches and walked 10,000 paces.
