Behind bars

Go to jail. Go directly to jail, and do not collect £200

One of the main tourist attractions in Fremantle is the prison. So it was hardly a surprise that it was the first stop on my tour of Fremantle, having taken a cruise down the Swan River from Perth.

Originally a convict barracks and built between 1852 and 1859 the prison closed only in 1991. Some of the prisoners decorated their cells with elaborate paintings and these have been preserved for tourists like myself to gawk at. A rare splash of colour in the sparse and harsh surroundings.
