Afternoon in Évora

Got the bus today from Lisbon to the largest town in the Alentejo (beyond the Tejo River) region - Évora - still quite a small town. We are staying just off the main square, within the city walls.

Went to a tiny bakery run by an elderly lady to try the local specialty - Pão de Rala. Legend has it that the convent here was so poor that when the king arrived, all they could offer him was bread, olives and water, but in gratitude for his visit, they invented this sweet, made with egg yolks, lemon, grated almonds and pumpkin. Delicious, though incredibly sweet.

Tomorrow, planning to meet up with a friend of a friend who is a local historian.

Also, sorry not to be commenting much - quite difficult to be on internet for long, but will do my best when I can.
